FOUNDATIONAL Competencies
The cornerstone of Christian mentoring is a relationship with God, apart from whom the work of a mentor falls flat (John 15:5). The X-Factor that allows for more than we could ask or imagine to be accomplished out of a mentoring relationship is the Holy Spirit at work in and through the mentor and the mentee (Ephesians 3:20).
Therefore, mentors must minister out of a vital relationship with God, others, and themselves. Any mentor under consideration needs to exhibit the following essential characteristics as a way of life. These qualities are preeminent in successful mentors and align with biblical standards (e.g., 1 Timothy 3:1-13, Titus 1:5-9).
Essential Competencies
These ten categories of behaviours facilitate the mentoring process. They flow out of the foundational qualities and support the Healthy Christian Leader Assessment. Each behaviour has an operational definition and a subset of behavioural expressions that clarify its scope.
