Natural Laws
God designed this world perfectly with natural laws. Consider a basic example: fruit, which Britannica describes as “the fleshy or dry ripened ovary of a flowering plant, enclosing the seed or seeds.” How perfect and beautiful fruit was made, to carry its own species’ means of survival inside itself. Moreover, this seed will go on to ensure the fruit continues to replicate.
I always find it funny to see seedless watermelon or grapes at the store. We’ve removed such an essential piece of nature for convenience. But because it doesn’t have seeds, it can’t replicate… so, is it still a fruit?
It’s also a reminder that God created us to have the seed or capacity to replicate the essential competencies that allow humans to grow and thrive. The law of replication is necessary for anything to survive… This includes leaders.
Mentors Make Mentors
John 15 reminds us, “I am the vine, you are the branches.” Like fruit, we are created to replicate, not only physically, but also intellectually. A seasoned Christian leader thinks beyond themselves and the person they are mentoring. We are not just there to transform others, but to teach them how to transform others in their turn. Mentors make mentors. Coaches train coaches. A leader develops leaders.
There is an adage, “those who can’t, teach,” which I believe should be altered to, “those who can, teach.” If we have competencies that we have gained through our experience, we are responsible for passing these competencies on to the younger generation so that these competencies can survive. In 2 Timothy, Paul said to Timothy, “You have heard me teach things that have been confirmed by many reliable witnesses. Now teach these truths to other trustworthy people who will be able to pass them on to others.” We also must train the next generation to pass it on to the next.
Matthew 28:18-20 (New Living Translation)
18 Jesus came and told his disciples, “I have been given all authority in heaven and on earth. 19 Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. 20 Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”
All over the world, leaders are developing leaders who develop leaders. This is the nature of the kingdom of God, making what He is doing unstoppable and uncontainable.
Reflection:
Think about people who have impacted your world and mentored you.
- Reflect on passing on what you have learned. How are you intentionally discipling?
- Who is shaping your world now?
